pillarGet Rid of Cockroaches In Your Home

There are a lot of troublesome bugs out there, but there’s no question: roaches are the worst. There’s nothing quite so unpleasant as dealing with a roach infestation. One day, you see a single roach. Before you know it, your kitchen cabinets are crawling with them. Or, you turn on the light in the middle of the night only to see them scurrying across the floor.

Roaches aren’t just ugly or creepy, either: they can be dangerous, too. When it comes to eliminating a real infestation, you need professional roach control services. Getting rid of roaches on your own can be next to impossible, and the help of a professional home pest control company can make all the difference.

What Are the Most Common Types of Roaches?

There are a number of roach species out there, but only a handful of them show up here in South Carolina.

The American cockroach, also known as the palmetto bug, is one of the largest roaches you’ll come across. They can measure up to 2.5” in length, and are quite common throughout the Southeast. Here in South Carolina, you may also run across the brown-banded cockroach. These are much smaller than American cockroaches, measuring half an inch in length. They’re easily identifiable thanks to the brown banding that shows up on their wings.

In addition to the American and brown-banded cockroach, you might also encounter Oriental or German cockroaches in your home. Oriental cockroaches are roughly 1” long and are sometimes referred to as “waterbugs,” as they prefer a wet habitat and can sometimes be found in drains and sinks. German cockroaches, meanwhile, are smaller: roughly ½”, much like the brown-banded cockroach. Unlike the brown-banded roach, though, German cockroaches have two small, dark stripes just behind their head (as opposed to the large brown stripes running across the wings of a brown-banded cockroach).

Identifying Your Roach Problem

One of the most important steps towards effective roach control involves identifying the type and extent of your roach infestation. Are you dealing with palmetto bugs, or German cockroaches? How bad is the infestation? Different roaches have different habits and life spans. Depending on the specifics of your situation, you’ll need to take a particular approach to controlling roaches in your home. That’s where the help of a professional home pest control service comes in.

Why Do I Have Roaches?

You know you’ve got a roach problem. You’ve seen roaches crawling around your kitchen, in your cabinets, and scurrying across your bathroom floor. But why do you have roaches in the first place?

Simply put, roaches invade your home in search of food, water, and a place to breed and nest. Unfortunately, though, simply eliminating sources of food (by cleaning up your kitchen cabinets, for example) is unlikely to get rid of cockroaches. That’s because roaches can survive without food for up to a month or more. They’re also capable of digesting all sorts of things that we wouldn’t normally think of as food, including glue, hair, leather, soap, and even books.

The sheer resilience of the cockroach is one of the things that makes them so difficult to get rid of. Fortunately, a home pest control professional can help.

Risks of a Roach Infestation: Are Roaches Dangerous?

Roaches aren’t just disgusting. They can be dangerous, too.

For one thing, roaches can secrete a fluid that actually stains and damages surfaces in your home. If your roach infestation is particularly bad, this fluid also produces an unpleasant odor.

More importantly, though, roaches can contaminate food and spread disease. It’s no secret that roaches are capable of carrying pathogens such as E. coli, staphylococcus, and Salmonella. When they crawl across food or food preparation surfaces, they can leave these pathogens behind and expose you and your loved ones to potential illness.

In addition to spreading disease, roaches can also trigger allergies in sensitive individuals. This can range from watery eyes and runny noses to serious skin rashes and even asthma.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why do I have a cockroach infestation?
In some cases, cockroaches are drawn to a home due to messy conditions: open food containers, dirty counters, and so on. Sometimes, though, roaches will invade a home simply because it’s easily accessible. Homes with a large number of cracks (such as openings around windows, doors, pipes, and so on) are particularly susceptible to roach invasions.
  • Are cockroaches dangerous?
No one likes the idea of their kitchen crawling with roaches, but cockroaches are more than just unpleasant. They can in fact pose a hazard to human health. Cockroaches are known to carry various bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella. These microorganisms can be transmitted to humans through contaminated food, resulting in serious illness. Additionally, cockroaches can trigger allergic reactions and asthma in sensitive individuals.
  • How do I eliminate American cockroaches?
Also known as Palmetto bugs, American cockroaches are generally drawn to humidity. This means that they tend to show up in your crawl space, drains, basement, and other damp areas. Effectively eliminating this pest requires paying close attention these parts as your home, as well as reducing humidity levels indoors wherever possible. It’s also important to seal the outside of your home to prevent future invasions. The less accessible your home is to roaches, the less likely you are to encounter problems in the future.
