How to Get Rid of Rodents

Rodent infestations are serious. If you see a mouse in the cupboard or encounter a rodent in your basement, it’s important to understand just how quickly a pair of rodents can turn into a full blown infestation. Rats and mice breed quickly, and before you know it you could be dealing with dozens of rodents in your home.

Trying to eliminate rodents on your own is next to impossible. Instead, let Home Pest Control assist you with rodent control in your home. We’ll help you determine what type of rodents you’re dealing with, assess the signs of an infestation, and take the steps necessary to achieve rodent control.

Common Types of Rodents

Rats and mice are the most common types of rodents you’re likely to encounter in your home.

Mice are smaller than rats. They typically measure just six to seven inches long including the length of their tail, and generally weigh no more than half an ounce. Rats on the other hand can be quite large. Some rats can grow to be up to 19 inches long (including their tail) and weigh as much as 11 ounces.

Other Types of Rodent Infestations

Though less common as pests, other types of rodents can cause trouble, too. Squirrels can nest in your attic or roof, chewing holes through walls and shredding insulation. Raccoons and opossums can dig through your garbage, making a mess around your home.

Warning Signs of a Rodent Infestation

Not sure if you’re dealing with a rodent infestation? Here are three major warning signs to look out for:

  • Nests: Mice and rats will commonly build nests in your attic, basement, or walls. Nests are generally found in warm areas in close proximity to food and water. Rodents will often build nests with shredded insulation, paper, and other materials they find around your home.
  • Droppings: If you find rodent droppings, you’re definitely dealing with an infestation. Mouse droppings are very small, measuring no more than 1/4" in length, whereas rat droppings can be a half an inch long or larger. The more droppings you find, the larger the infestation you’re likely to be dealing with.
  • Noises: Certain noises can be a sign of a rodent infestation, too. If you hear squeaking and scratching noises coming from inside your walls, you may have rodents in your home. Given that rodents are nocturnal, these noises are most commonly heard at night.

Risks and Dangers of Rodents

Rodents aren’t just unsightly: they can present serious risks to your family and home.

  • Allergic Reactions: Sensitive individuals can suffer allergic reactions as a result of contact with rodent droppings. These reactions can range in seriousness from mild to severe.
  • Damage: Rats and mice can wreak havoc on the structure of your home. It’s common for rodents to chew holes through walls, dig through containers of food in your kitchen cupboards, and shred soft materials such as wall and ceiling insulation for building nests.
  • Disease: Rodent droppings and saliva can transmit serious diseases, such as the deadly Hantavirus. Mice and rats are known to carry and transmit salmonella, leptospirosis, and other illnesses as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are rats and mice the same?
Many people confuse rats and mice, assuming that they’re two names for the same creature. However, rats and mice are different pests.
  • How do I know if I have rats or mice?
The easiest way to tell mice and rats apart is by their size. Mice are generally quite small, measuring just 3 to 4 inches long with an accompanying 3 to 4 inch tail. Meanwhile, rats can be much larger: some rats have bodies that measure up to 11 inches long in addition to a 9 inch tail. Rats can also weigh ten times as much as mice (or even more, in some cases).
  • Are rodents dangerous?
Mice, rats, and other rodents can carry a wide array of dangerous diseases. Rodents can contaminate food and various surfaces in your home with their feces and urine, putting you at risk of contracting these diseases. Some of the infections carried by rats in particular (such as hantavirus) are lethal in many cases. If you encounter rodents in your home, contact a Home Pest Control professional for help.
