How-To Get Rid of Cockroaches
In South Carolina, cockroaches can show up in your home during any season. Thanks to our humid climate and mild winters, these pests thrive year-round.
Knowing how to prevent roaches is key, and these tips will help you do just that. An added bonus is that many cockroach prevention tips will help keep you accountable to staying on top of your cleaning and home maintenance!
1. Assess the situation.
Where are the cockroaches coming from? Where in your house are you finding them? What has changed in or around your home recently? Knowing the answers to these questions can make sure your treatment efforts are targeted and effective.
2. Eliminate sources of food.
Roaches enter homes in search of food, water, and shelter. Keeping food in airtight containers (including pet food) and cleaning up messes promptly can help, but keep in mind that roaches consider things like glue, hair, leather, soap and books to be food.
3. Address home maintenance issues.
As mentioned above, cockroaches are looking for water, and a wet, dark, decomposing area can be the perfect place for them to take shelter. Inspect your home for things like leaky or broken pipes, as well as any cracks or openings. Broken shingles, cracks in your foundation, and even gaps in your doors or windows can serve as entry points for roaches.
4. Declutter the home regularly.
It’s easy to let boxes pile up from things like online orders, but cardboard boxes can act as shelter for roaches. Fun fact: roaches release pheromones that tell others in the colony that they’ve found a place to live, so they can follow one another’s scent. One roach can quickly lead to an infestation!
5. Bring in the professionals.
You may be tempted to DIY your roach treatment, but we highly recommend leaving it to the professionals. Cockroaches can be difficult to get rid of, and using a professional pest control company can ensure the extermination is targeted, environmentally friendly and effective.
