Keeping Creepy-Crawlies Out of Your Home

Few things can gross out a homeowner more than the sight of a cockroach or mouse skittering across the floor. Pests are attracted to a lot of things commonly present in homes, so it’s important to stay vigilant for any infestations, either visible or not. Pest problems can cause serious damage to your home and can make living in it unsanitary. The most surefire way to ensure you never have to deal with raccoons in the attic or termites in the walls is to prevent it in the first place.

Keep Things Dry

The presence of water can suggest drainage problems in your home, which are already difficult to deal with, but it is also a common draw for many pests. Water damage in your gutters or yard can attract mosquitos who view standing puddles as an ideal breeding ground.

When water is absorbed into walls or beneath your home, the supporting wood begins rotting, allowing termites to set up shop. Check your drainage pipes frequently to prevent leaks and ensure your downspouts and gutters aren’t pooling water around your yard. If you notice water damage or drainage issues, act immediately to lower your risk of pest infestation.

Keep Holes Sealed

Even the tiniest crack or hole in your walls could attract some unwelcome roommates. Mice, rats and cockroaches love the darkness inside your walls and the insulation is perfect for breeding. To make sure your walls aren’t scratching in the middle of the night, check the exterior and interior of your home for signs of an opening. If you find one, place a patch over the hole or fill the gap with steel wool to dissuade any potential visitors.

Keep Food Locked Away

Pests have a way of sniffing out your pantry and getting into all your goodies. Your kitchen can be a hotspot for pest activity because there are so many attributes that draw pests inside: water, dark spaces in the cabinets and food, especially sugary varieties, are known for attracting ants, cockroaches, mice and other vermin. If exposed to pests, your food can become contaminated with diseases and allergens that can easily make you and your family ill if consumed. Store your edible items in airtight containers in a cool and dry place to reduce the risk of pests snacking on your family’s food.
