Subterranean
Subterranean Termite
Family Rhinotermit

Termites swarm primarily in the spring searching for a location to establish new colonies. Termite colonies have a three cast infrastructure; workers, soldiers and reproductives.

Identification

Soldiers have an elongated head win pincer-like antennae. Swarmers/alates are primary reproductive termites. They have four wings of equal size. We often see swarmers in early spring searching/swarming in search of a place to reproduce.

Size: Worker: 1/8 to 3/8 inch in length. Soldier: 1/8 to 3/8 inch in length large head and powerful antennae/pincers.Reproductives: one inch in length.

Color: Worker: pale, cream color. Soldier: light in color with a brown head. Primary Reproductive: dark brown/black

Habits

Subterranean termites live in colonies in the ground. From here they build vertical tunnels that look like mud tubes when seen above ground. Mud tubes are their pathways when looking for food. Since termites cannot survive if exposed to air for an extended period of time, these tunnels protect them from light and air and allow the termites to carry food to the nest. Subterranean termites can create tunnels through the cracks in concrete so slab homes are not immune to termites.

Tips for Control

General tips for limiting infestation:In order to prevent infestations or make termites easier to detect, there are several things a homeowner can do:

• Store firewood away from the house.
• Make sure four inches of foundation can be seen around the home.
• Siding should not extend into the soil and mulch and soil should not touch the siding.
• Insure water drains away from the foundation. Rain gutters can help achieve this, however, direct the water away from the house.
• Correct roof or plumbing leaks immediately. Termites can survive above ground when these conditions exist.
