Formosan Subterranean
Coptotermes formosanus
Formosan Subterranean termites live in large underground colony systems. Swarming season begins following a warm, rainy day in spring on into early summer. The queen settles in and produces more than 1000 eggs per day. During the 15 life span of a queen, the colony expands into the tens of thousands.

Identification

Kings and queens have two pair of wings equal in size and shape. The wings extend beyond the length of the abdomen. . Soldiers have pale soft bodies and large, dark, hard-shelled heads with powerful antennae.

Size: Swarmers are approximately ½ inch in length including the wings.

Color: Swarmers are a brownish yellow.

Habits
The colony size of Subterranean Formosa termites is ten times that of the subterranean group. The Formosa termites construct mud nests within walls and other enclosed spaces of structures. Thousands of termites exist in these structures and the nests serve as a reservoir of moisture to sustain them during dry periods. This species is prevalent in the southern United States. South Carolina with it’s warm, humid climate is especially susceptible to the Formosa termite. Because of the colony size, this species can cause significant damage at a very rapid pace. The Formosa termite can live underground as well as above ground in aerial nests that have no connection to the soil.

Tips for Control

Once the Subterranean Formosa termite has invaded a home, they are very difficult to control. Prevention should be the first line of defense:

General tips for limiting infestation:
• When possible, use pressure treated wood. This wood is more resistant to termite attack.
• Repair leaky plumbing, air conditioning condensation, poor drainage, and inadequate ventilation. This reduces any additional moisture that would attract termites.
• Eliminate all wood-to-soil and rigid foam board-to-ground contact.
• Remove any wood debris from the exterior and under the house.
