Identification
Drywood termites have soft bodies and are cylinder-like in shape. They have six legs and multiple eyes.
Size: Soldiers are approximately 3/8 inch in length; male and female reproductives are up to ½ inch long. During the swarming stage, they have four wings of equal size that extend 1/8 inch to 1 inch beyond the body length.
Color: King, queen and soldiers: light brown; nymphs pales, cream color.
Habit
Infestation only occurs in drywood and is most often found in wood framing.
Winged, reproductive drywood termites leave the existing colony, mate
and create a new colony in a small wood opening.
Tips for Control
General tips for limiting infestation:
• Store firewood and lumber away from the house.
• Screen windows and doors, ventilation areas as well as openings in attics
and crawl spaces.
• Seal exterior cracks and nail holes
• Maintain the exterior wood surface of your home. Insure all surfaces
are painted or coated with a varnish or sealant.
