Dampwood Termite
Family Hodotermitidae
Dampwwood termites live in colonies. Mature colonies release “swarmers” (winged male and females) in the spring through to early fall. After mating, the wings are shed and they proceed to infest stumps and fallen logs. They now become the king and queen of the newly formed colony. The nymphs perform house-keeping tasks and locating food. Once the nymphs mature they become reproductives (alates) or soldiers. Dampwood termites are much larger than subterranean or drywood termites and, as such, can be alarming in appearance.

Identification

Kings and queens have two pair of wings equal in size and shape. The wings extend beyond the length of the abdomen. . Soldiers have pale soft bodies and large, dark, hard-shelled heads with powerful antennae.

Size: King and queen range from ½ to 5/8 inch. Nymphs achieve up to 5/8 inch. Soldiers reach up to ¾ inch in length.

Color: Kings and Queens are various shades of brown. During swarming time they have wings that are smoky in appearance

Habits
Dampwood termites infest wood with excessive moisture. Any condition that creates this type of moisture level is ideal for colonization by the dampwood termite.

Tips for Control

General tips for limiting infestation:
Leaky plumbing and faulty gutters or downspouts can result in moisture levels ideal for infestation by dampwood termites. Insure all plumbing and gutter leaks are repaired as soon as possible.
