Brown Recluse Spider
Loxosceles recluse

The brown recluse spider, like most spiders, does not seek to bite people. The bite is usually accidental. A bite is a defense mode usually as a result of being trapped. Unfortunately, the bite of this spider produces a nasty result in people, such as open, ulcerating sores. If left untreated, such bites become infected and significant tissue necrosis can occur. It is best to seek medical attention if bitten.

Identification

Size: Up to one inch in length with a leg span up to two inches

Color: Brownish grey with a number of various markings

It has six eyes arranged in three pairs at the front of the head area and the fiddle-shaped marking on the back.

Habits

Any corner inside or outside is suitable for brown recluse spiders to construct their webs. These spiders are more common in garages, crawl spaces, and basements.

Tips for Control

If a home has experienced brown recluse spiders, you can reduce the chances of bites by following the steps below:

• Store clothing in sealed plastic bags inside drawers or inside plastic storage compartments
• Store shoes inside plastic shoeboxes
• Move beds away from walls and curtains
• Do not leave clothing on the floor. If left on the floor, shake clothing and inspect before wearing
• If living in an infested home, get into the habit of inspecting bedding prior to climbing in.
