Size: One of the larger rodent species. They grow up to a body length of 10 to 12 inches. Typically, they weigh in at less than a pound.
Color: Grey to brown to black
Roof rats have long tails, thin bodies with large eyes and ears. They are found less often in homes because their large size minimizes accessibility.
Habits
Once their food sources are depleted in the Fall, Roof rats seek other venues for food. Homes and other building structures are likely candidates. Because of their size, Roof rats are less likely to gain access to houses/buildings. They need an opening of about the one inch to gain entry. Primarily, rats live in fields, wooded areas, vacant lots, farms and anywhere people have buidings.
Tips for Control
General tips for limiting infestation:
The most effective way to avoid an invasion is to minimize areas that attract rodents. Seal as many holes and cracks in the outside of the home as possible.
• Keep firewood stored away from the house.
• Remove any piles of debris, stones, bricks, etc. that are near to your
home.
•
Don’t allow piles of leaves to accumulate next to your home’s
foundation.
•
Seal any hole or crack larger than ¼ inch.
• Install thick weather stripping on the bottom of all doors to prevent
rodents from entering.
