As their name implies, Pack rats have a habit of taking small, bright or color objects and hoarding them in their nests. They have been known to abandon food and nesting items for the shiny objects. They are particularly attracted to bottle caps, beer can tabs, bits of foil, coins and jewelry.

Pack rats area associated with a number of diseased that infect humans, including plague and lime disease. A dead rat should never be handled using bare hands. Particular caution should be exhibited to avoid any parasites, especially fleas and ticks.

Identification

Size: Their bodies are about eight inches in length with the tail slightly shorter than the head and body combined.

Color: Depending on the species the color varies from cinnamon to brown, gray, yellowish grey and creamy buff. The underside is a much lighter color than the upper body

Habits

Pack racks are primarily nocturnal creatures, however, they can be active during the day. Once they establish a nest in your home or building, they will forage for food both inside and outside of the structure. Pack rats are very good climbers and can easily make there way throughout a building.

Tips for Control

General tips for limiting infestation:

The most effective way to avoid an invasion is to minimize areas that attract rodents. Seal as many holes and cracks in the outside of the home as possible.

• Keep firewood stored away from the house.
• Remove any piles of debris, stones, bricks, etc. that are near to your home.
• Don’t allow piles of leaves to accumulate next to your home’s foundation.
• Seal any hole or crack larger than ¼ inch.
• Install thick weather stripping on the bottom of all doors to prevent rodents from entering.
