Identification
Size: They can grow up to 10 to 12 inches. Typically, this species weighs no more than a pound.
Color: Varies from gray to brown to black
Habits
Rats and mice demonstrate common behavioral traits. When outside food sources deplete in the Fall, they look to find new food sources. Unfortunately, one of these sources is your home. These rats need an entry hole about one inch in diameter to gain entry into a building. Additionally, Norway rats can find another home close to yours in stacked firewood, stones and bricks as well as piles of leaves or other debris.
Tips for Control
General tips for limiting infestation:
The most effective way to avoid an invasion is to minimize areas that attract rodents. Seal as many holes and cracks in the outside of the home as possible.
• Keep firewood stored away from the house.
• Remove any piles of debris, stones, bricks, etc. that are near to your
home.
•
Don’t allow piles of leaves to accumulate next to your home’s
foundation.
•
Seal any hole or crack larger than ¼ inch.
• Install thick weather stripping on the bottom of all doors to prevent
rodents from entering.
