Color: Shiny gray or silver
Habits
Fungal molds and organic matter are the favored food of Silverfish. Because of their appetite for fungal mold and organic matter, Silverfish can damage fabrics, paper and book bindings. Silverfish live in cracks and voids commonly found in attics, basements, and crawl spaces. In South Carolina, and other southern states, they are also found outside. Cedar shake roofs seem to be a favorable breeding ground for Silverfish and increase the likelihood for infestation. Inside the home, Silverfish are seen most often in kitchens and bathrooms.
Tips for Control
Silverfish can be very difficult to control, especially areas that hold moisture which is conducive to the growth of surface molds. Silverfish can nest in soffits and behind the boards of gutters. Once entrenched in their nest, they can easily invade homes.
