Carpet Beetle
Anthrenus spp.

Carpet beetles, although not particularly threatening to our health, can cause damage to personal belongings. These pests feed on anything made of natural fibers, especially wool and cashmere.

Identification

Size: Tiny, round beetles. Larvae reach up to ¼ inch in length, adults grow to 1/16 inch.

Color: Tan with tiny black, brown, and white scales with tufts of stiff hairs on the body.

Habits

In the home, carpet beetles can be found living under carpets, rugs and in voids where hairs or dead insects have accumulated. They nest in our woolen, silk, and other natural fiber clothing.

Tips for Control

General tips for limiting infestation:

Carpet beetles require a professional HOME Pest Control inspector in order to locate the areas of infestation. However, there are some steps you can take until your fabric pest problem is under control:

• If at all possible, don’t store boxes of clothes in the attic, garage or basement.
• If you need to store clothing in boxes, completely clean boxes before storage and seal all corners and openings with tape.
• Clean woolen and natural fiber clothing prior to storage.
• In closets, cover natural fiber clothing with individual plastic covers.
• If possible, store clothing in large zippered plastic bags.
• Use mothballs to deter pests. However, they do leave a residual odor that may require dry cleaningto remove.
