Typically, the Brown Banded cockroach rests in cracks and voids, and is active at night when it feels safe move around in search of food and water. Because they don’t need as much water as the German cockroach, they can be found in rooms other than kitchens and bathrooms. The Brown Banded cockroach will eat anything that contains organic matter even glues used in books and furniture construction.

Identification

Size: Adults are approximately ½- inch in length

Color: Male is light brown. The female may have dark brown wings. The male is long and thin; while the female is more oval in shape.

Habits

Typically found in apartments, motels, and long term care facilities. They can be found in kitchens and bathrooms, however, because they can survive in drier areas, they can also be found in bedrooms, closets, living rooms, etc.

Tips for Control

Cockroaches need food, water and shelter to thrive. Limiting anyone of these necessities makes it more difficult for cockroaches to establish themselves and increase in size. The following steps can help in preventing and limiting infestations:

• Inspect incoming food goods, boxes, and used furniture joints
• Avoid storing food items in cardboard boxes.
• Do not store paper bags under the sink or in any kitchen area. Paper bags or products should be stored in a dry room or garage.
• Seal holes or cracks around plumbing pipes under sinks and around toilet piping.
