The American cockroach is the largest cockroach that infests homes and buildings in the United States. In South Carolina, this cockroach is often referred to as the “palmetto bug” or “water bug”. This insect may be recognized by a yellow “figure-8” on the shield at the front of the body. This cockroach, like all cockroaches will eat anything we eat and many things we won’t.

Identification

Size: Up to 2 inches long.

Color: Reddish brown

Habits

The American cockroach thrives in warm, damp environments, such as sewers, steam tunnels, basements and crawl spaces. Because of our warm, humid climate, this insect can also be found living outdoors.

General tips for limiting infestation:

The key to control is to find and treat these sources directly. Successful control requires the treatment of crawl spaces, exterior cracks in the home and treating outdoor areas where cockroaches are likely to harbor.
