Fire ants sting anyone who ventures into their path. Typically, a person seldom receives just one sting. Usually, dozens or hundreds of stings are inflicted quickly on a person standing next to or kneeling on a mound. Although stings, for the most part, result in a raised welt, people allergic to insect stings can experience a serious reaction.

Identification

Size: Sizes range from 1/8 inch to 3/8 inch.

Color: Reddish brown

Habits

Fire ants nest in soil and build large mounds that are easily seen in lawns. A single lawn may contain more than a dozen mounds. These ants also locate nests within landscape timbers where they are not easy to detect. Fire ants are known to construct mounds next to foundations and enter homes through holes or exterior cracks or holes. Once inside, they forage beneath the edge of carpeting. Fire ants can also bring soil up into interior walls and beneath flooring to build their nest.

Because of the health threat posed by fire ants, it is important to take the necessary steps to control the ants around the home and in the yard. Regular treatment is essential because ants readily reinvade form neighboring properties.
