Formica spp.

Field ants are found in yards, landscaping, fields and wooded areas. They build mounds up to 12 inches in diameter. However, they often nest under stones, logs, landscape timbers and porch slabs.

Identification

Size: Measure up to 3/8 inch in length

Color: Black field ants are the most common. However, red, brown, red and black, and golden yellow species can be encountered around homes and buildings

Habits

These ants are often found crawling on porches, foundations and decks. The field ant can be confused with the carpenter ant because they have a similar size and coloration.

Tips for Control

General tips for limiting ant infestation:

Field ants rarely invade houses. However, if colonies are located where they become unsightly or create an annoyance, individual mounds can be treated with an appropriate pest control product.
