Color: Varies from dark brown to black. The body is shiny in appearance
Habits
Colonies of Argentine ants can grow quite large and contain thousands of workers and numerous queens. Each colony is divided into subcolonies located in suitable areas connected to established truck trails. The number of subcolonies range from a few hundred to a few thousand.
This species resides outdoors, usually in shallow nests in the soil beneach a stone, board or any other item that provides protectioin. Often they locate in piles of lumber, bricks or debris; in landscape mulch; behind brick and storage areas, within and under insulation; and in wall voids or other small crevices. The Argentine ants are very aggressive and will drive out other species of ants.
Tips for Control
The key to successful control is finding and treating the areas where the ant colonies are located. A nest may be located far above the ground in a tree where it is accessible to direct treatment.
General tips for limiting ant infestation:
• Eliminate piles of lumber, bricks, or other debris
that can be used by ants as a nesting area.
• Keep landscape mulch less than 2 inches thick and at least 12 inches
from the foundation
• Ensure the sprinkler system does not spray directly onto the foundation
• Seal cracks in your home’s exterior
• When landscaping, avoid using plants that attract aphids and similar
insects.
